With Lake Waikamarino Lodge as your base, you can walk, hike, or tramp one of the most amazing native bush tracks in the world.

The Great Walk is our description of the magnificent Lake Waikaremoana Track, listed as one the the great New Zealand walks by the Department of Conservation.

The Great Walk is a 46 kilometre, three to five day tramping track of easy to moderate difficulty. It follows the lakeshore for most of its length and there are 5 DoC huts and campsites along the way. Magnificent forested scenery and plenty of opportunity for swimming and fishing are features of the track. One of many walking tracks in the area, The Great Walk can be walked at any time of the year by independent groups or individuals. (For full details for independent trampers and hikers click here).

Outside of the peak season (20th December to 31st January) you can choose instead to do a 2, 3, 4 or 5 day guided tramp on The Great Walk organised by Whakamarino Lodge. The Whakamarino Lodge Guided Walks include educative, informative discussion along the way on the Eco-environment, native fauna and flora plus the natural and cultural history of this amazing area. Cost includes experienced guide fees,shuttle from the Lodge to the start of the walk, hut fees, meals along the way, water taxi back from the end of the walk to jetty, shuttle back to Lodge). You can book your guided walk when your reserve your accommodation at Lake Whakamarino Lodge.

(A) Two Day Walk:

Onepoto to Panekiri Hut (overnight stay): 5 hr, 8.8 km

Panekiri Hut to Waiopaoa Hut and campsite: 3-4 hr, 7.6 km

(B) Three Day Walk

As above but overnight stay at Waiopaoa Hut.

Waiopaoa Hut to Korokoro campsite: 1 1/2hr, 3.6 km

Korokoro campsite to Maraunui campsite: 2 1/2hr, 6.8 km

Maraunui campsite to Marauiti Hut: 30min, 1.7 km

(C) Four Day Walk

As above but overnight stay Marauiti Hut.

Marauiti Hut to the new (very flash) Waiharuru Hut and campsite: 2 hr, 6.2km

(Spend day here fishing or swimming) or go on to the Tapuaenui campsite: 1 1/2 hr, 2.1km

and then on to the Whanganui Hut: 1hr, 3.2km

D) Five Day Walk

As above but overnight stay at the Waiharuru Hut

Waiharuru Hut and campsite to Tapuaenui campsite: 1 1/2 hr, 2.1km

Tapuaenui campsite to Whanganui Hut: 1hr, 3.2km

Whanganui Hut to Hopuruahine Landing: 45min, 2.7km

The Whakamarino Lodge Guided Walks around the Great Walk (Lake Waikaremoana Track) cost $200.00 per day per person. Charges do not include before and after accomodation at Lake Whakamarino Lodge. To avoid disappointment we recommend you reserve your lodge accommodation and guided Great Walk as far in advance as possible.
