You can escape from the stress of city life (and even the world itself) at Lake Whakamarino Lodge, in the North Island of New Zealand.
From your bedroom window you're only a stone's throw away from the water's edge where you can watch the beautiful black swans glide gracefully past as you take in the whole panorama of lush native bush and forest that surrounds the lake.
Lake Whakamarino means "tranquillity" in the local Maori language and it is one of four smaller lakes near the larger Lake Waikaremoana in the Te Urewera National Park. Remote, rugged, immense, Te Urewera contains the largest forested wilderness remaining in the North Island. From here you are only a couple of hours by road to the very edge of the Earth...the spectacular East Coast of New Zealand where the sun first rises every morning!
And if wilderness fishing excites your very being, then you need to come here. Some of the largest brown and rainbow trout in New Zealand have been caught in the rivers and lakes in and around the Te Urewera National Park and Lake Whakamarino is where a 13 -kilogram (28.6 pound) wild brown trout was caught with rod and fly earlier this year!
For trampers and hikers, the Lodge is the perfect base from which to set out on a variety of walks and tracks including the famous Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk. This is a 46 kilometre, three to four day tramping track that follows the lakeshore for most of its length. Magnificent forested scenery and plenty of opportunity for swimming and fishing are features of this world-renowned walking track.
When you visit this very special area, you can learn all about the Children of the Mist, the history and culture of the local Maori iwi (tribe) the Tuhoe people.
For the more adventurous you can enjoy some exciting activities like kayaking, horse trekking, or cruising the magnificent hidden bays of Lake Waikaremoana in a luxury charter boat. Take a guided Eco-tour and discover the most amazing native fauna and flora that you will have never seen anywhere else in the world.
The Lodge itself was originally built in 1925 and provides moderately priced, comfortable accommodation in a picture postcard setting. Friendly old fashioned hospitality is one of it's charms. There is good access from the East by mainly sealed roads (via Frasertown or Wairoa) from Gisborne or Napier or from the north-west via unsealed gravel road from Rotorua and Murupara. Of course you are only minutes away by helicopter from Gisborne, Rotorua or Napier.
Accommodation in the Waikaremoana area is very limited in the peak summer season (October to March) so secure your reservation at Lake Whakamarino Lodge as soon as you can.
