The trip from Gisborne, Hawkes Bay to Whakamarino Lodge at Tuai is only two hours pleasant
driving through stunning rural countryside (via Matawhero and Waipaoa River bridge, then take the Tineroto Road to Frasertown and then SH 38 to the Tuai turnoff. Alternatively, you can drive via the SH 2 coastal highway through the Wharerata Forest to Wairoa and then SH 38 via Frasertown to the Tuai turnoff. Helicopter services are also available from Gisborne if you're in hurry to reach paradise! (10 to 15 mins from Gisborne airport).
Similar distance and time from Napier/Hastings via Wairoa and Frasertown.
You can also come to Tuai from Rotorua via Murupara, Ruatahuna and the north-eastern side of Lake Waikaremoana (unsealed gravel road over scenic hills and mountains ( 3 hours). Whichever way you come, getting here can be half the fun! Just do it!
